Install the CLI and Loams Desktop
Download the loams CLI or Loams Desktop for your platform, and verify it against the release checksums and the project's GPG key.
Every Loams release on GitHub carries the loams CLI and Loams Desktop for Linux, macOS and Windows. The CLI packages also install git-remote-loams, git's remote helper for Loams Git, next to loams.
| Platform | loams CLI | Loams Desktop |
|---|---|---|
| Linux x64, arm64 | .deb, .rpm, .pkg.tar.zst | .deb, .rpm, .pacman, .AppImage |
| macOS arm64, x64 | .tar.gz | .dmg, .zip |
| Windows x64 | .zip | NSIS installer, .zip |
The server stack itself is Linux containers. On macOS and Windows, run the compose stack with Docker Desktop, or run the engine alone with loams dev.
Verify the download first
Check every file before you install it. The release has a SHA256SUMS file for the CLI and the other release files, DESKTOP-SHA256SUMS for the desktop files, and a detached GPG signature SHA256SUMS.asc over the checksums.
The project's release key:
| Key | https://loams.dev/gpg.asc (the same file as docs/release/loams-release-key.asc in the repository) |
| Fingerprint | 333A C945 99D5 A1EB 2A41 6D1E 83DC 134D 8CAF 895D |
| User ID | Loams Release Signing Key <security@ostriumlabs.org> |
curl -fsSLO https://loams.dev/gpg.asc
gpg --import gpg.asc
gpg --fingerprint security@ostriumlabs.org # must print 333A C945 99D5 A1EB 2A41 6D1E 83DC 134D 8CAF 895D
# in the directory holding the files you downloaded, SHA256SUMS and SHA256SUMS.asc
gpg --verify SHA256SUMS.asc SHA256SUMS
sha256sum -c SHA256SUMS --ignore-missingThe .deb, .pacman and AppImage desktop files also carry a detached signature each:
gpg --verify loams-desktop-0.1.0-linux-x86_64.AppImage.sig loams-desktop-0.1.0-linux-x86_64.AppImageA good signature names Loams Release Signing Key <security@ostriumlabs.org> and the fingerprint above. If gpg --verify reports a bad signature, or a checksum does not match, do not install the file; report it privately to security@ostriumlabs.org.
What is signed today
The release workflows sign the .deb and pacman packages, the AppImage, the macOS desktop files
and SHA256SUMS with the project key. In 0.1.0 the .rpm files and the Windows installer are
not signed yet (.rpm signing through SignPath is planned, and the desktop ones are named
-unsigned), and Windows and macOS binaries are not code-signed: for those, the signed
SHA256SUMS is the check.
See the code signing policy.
Install the CLI
sudo apt install ./loams_0.1.0_amd64.debThe Linux packages put loams and git-remote-loams in /usr/bin and install systemd units (loams.service, loams@.service). Check the install:
loams --helpInstall Loams Desktop
Loams Desktop opens in Loams Studio, the agentic development environment (experimental), and carries the console.
- Linux: install the
.deb,.rpmor.pacmanwith your package manager, or make the.AppImageexecutable (chmod +x) and run it. The AppImage updates in place. - macOS: open the
.dmgand drag Loams to Applications, then runxattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Loams.apponce. - Windows: run the NSIS installer, or extract the
.zip. SmartScreen may ask, as above.
Or build from source
You need Rust through rustup (the repository pins the toolchain) and protoc (apt install protobuf-compiler, brew install protobuf or pacman -S protobuf). On Windows you also need the MSVC Build Tools and NASM; see the build-from-source guides.
git clone https://github.com/ostrium-labs/loams.git
cd loams
cargo build --release -p loams # add -j 4 with less than 32 GB of RAMThe first build compiles DataFusion, Lance and Tantivy, so it is heavy.
Next: run Loams locally.
